I had previously interviewed people as part of research or to actually feature their stories in projects.
As a project in my third semester I made a concept for a multi media exhibition featuring objects that homeless people carry around with them and the stories behind those objects. Among others, the objects included an old key, several photographs, an army knife, a bible, a locket and a broken phone. I interviewed and filmed with around 20 homeless people in Wiesbaden and put the stories and footage together in the concept for the exhibition and on a website.
The exhibition was supposed to feature photographs alongside actual objects, each of which received a QR code that led to an audio recording of the owner telling the story behind the object. The concept was presented to the NGO vision:teilen as part of my interactive design class.
The similarity between those two projects was in the challenge to find people willing to share their stories with me and the unpredictability of the material I would get, not allowing for a strict concept and accurate planning beforehand.
